March Meeting - 27th of March
Our talk this month will be on Sustainable Varroa Control and will be presented by Lynfa Davies, Master Beekeeper, NDB.
“Managing varroa levels in your colonies is essential for their health and productivity and it’s fair to say that the varroa mite presents the greatest challenge to our bees.
This talk will explain how to keep varroa levels under control using an Integrated Pest Management approach. This approach reduces our reliance on chemical treatments and can support our bees develop their own strategies and adaptations towards controlling varroa, which is surely the direction that we all want to be going.”
Lynfa is a member of the Welsh Beekeepers’ Association Learning and Development Committee and regularly gives talks and leads training sessions on practical aspects of beekeeping. She is a regular speaker at events and association meetings and her articles appear in the beekeeping press so her talk to us on the 27th March is one not to be missed. For those who are not able to attend I will try to make a recording of the presentation available following the meeting.

As the title suggests, this talk begins at Buckfast Abbey and ends at Buckingham Palace, but there are many and varied locations in between – ranging from the bees on the roof of Manchester cathedral to hives in the militarised zone of Salisbury Plane.
We meet beekeepers who keep their bees in skeps and those who keep them in enormous glasshouses for the commercial pollination of fruit. Along the way we visit the country parish of Charles Butler – author of The Feminine Monarchy, rediscover the site of the first recorded drone congregation areas, uncover the apiary location of one of Victorian Britain’s preeminent beekeeping experts, and meet Patricia Greene – the actress who has played beekeeper Jill Archer for over 60 years in The Archers. And more besides …
