Classroom Sessions: The 2 full day classroom sessions aim to give students the key knowledge required to take their first steps in beekeeping and are aimed at people who have started keeping bees in the last 12 months, intend to start keeping bees, or people who have a keen interest but are not sure beekeeping is for them.
The Beginners Course was delivered at Broughton Primary School in 2024. It has previously been delivered at Scunthorpe Community Centre. 2025 will see us return to Broughton.

Apiary Days: This year we have decided to hold the course slightly later in the year to allow more reliable access to weather dependant practical activities. We hope that this will help students by minimising the gap between the classroom course and practical apiary sessions. The 2 classroom sessions are followed on by access to practical apiary sessions throughout the summer at the Districts training apiary in Hibaldstow. The first few session of the year will be reserved for the exclusive attendance of our Beginners Students.
Membership: Included with the course fee is Local membership of our district. This will give you access to all our monthly meeting which typically involve a guest speaker (N.B £1.00 on the door to cover refreshments). These are a great way to continue learning about beekeeping. You will also have ongoing access to our weekly apiary sessions and other district initiative such as bulk purchase arrangements.
Optionally you can choose to upgrade your membership to Full membership. This is strongly advised if you already have bees or intend to get some in 2025. See the membership page for details.

Continued support: The course aims to give you the theoretical and practical knowledge to take your first steps in beekeeping. However, with beekeeping, you never stop learning. We give as much ongoing support as we can in your first year and beyond. Additionally, where possible we also try to pair all beginners who wish to keep their own bees with a local mentor.
Please note - We cannot guarantee the availibility of a local mentor especially if you live outside our North Lincolnshire area. However all students will be welcome to attend our Hibaldstow training apiary for a series of practical sessions throughout the season

The course is intended to equip you with enough information and skills to enable you to feel confident in entering the fascinating world of beekeeping. It will be guided the programme produced by the BBKA (British Beekeepers Association) and will be supplemented with practical tasks, various speakers and an additional practical session with live bees at our training apiary where you will be provided with suitable protective clothing.
A team of experienced beekeepers (all members of our District) run the Course. All of whom remember clearly what it was like when they started beekeeping.
After the course has finished you will be invited to attend our weekly inspections (weather permitting) held at the apiary throughout the Spring and Summer.
You will be introduced to our District and the different support mechanisms and associations that will support you along the way. We are a District within the Lincolnshire Beekeepers Association and in turn affiliated to the National British Beekeepers Association. We also have a District website: http://www.northlincsbeekeepers.org.uk/ and a group Facebook page: www.facebook.com/groups/northlincsbeekeepers. You will also be welcome to attend our District meetings which are held monthly at Broughton Village Hall. Local membership of our District is included in the course fee.

Best wishes, Kevin Seddon
